FIFTEEN
Ian watched the men disappear into the trees, leaving Adam and him defenseless without a clue what to expect. The first mate said they were going to be hunted, but by what? Were they going to release something and set it loose for Ian and Adam to defend themselves from?
The two stood back to back, moving in a fast circle to keep their surroundings in full view.
âRemember what I said about Melgar taking prisoners?â said Adam.
âYes.â
âI think this is something else entirely.â
âDo ya honestly not know how to say a direct thought?â Ian yelled. âWhat do you mean âsomethinâ else entirelyâ?â
âI think it would be obvious by now! Weâre being hunted!â
âBy what?â
A twig snapped above them, but nothing could be seen. What kind of game were these men forcing them to play?
And right on cue, Adamâs shoulder was struck by a blunt object that sent pain extending deep into his arm. In seconds, Adam stumbled backward, a rock no bigger than his palm ricocheting off the side of his head and sending him straight to the ground.
It was remarkable how much information one could absorb in only a matter of seconds, which was just how much time Ian had to discover what they were up against.
Before him stood the remnants of a man who looked very much like Phillip Garrow. His wild hair was matted with grime and dirt and clinging to his chapped skin. There displayed the evidence of tortureâscarring wounds and crusted blood exposed through stained, tattered fabric.
âPhillip,â said Adam, hurrying to his feet, but his brother didnât respond. He maintained a hardened glare as he lunged forward with a rusted sword in hand.
Ian had little time to react. His body hunched forward as Phillipâs blade swung sideways, the tip just missing his belly. Phillip repeated the move from the opposite direction, and again Ian avoided injury by an inch, but it knocked him off balance.
On his back, Ian rolled to avoid being skewered as Phillip went for the plunge. The edge nicked his forearm with a sharp sting just as Adam regained his balance and moved to grab Phillip from behind. One arm was over his shoulder and around his neck, the other seizing his wrist that held the sword. Adam attempted to bend it backward, forcing his grip to open. But in one swift move, Phillip elbowed him in the stomach and lurched forward to fling him over his shoulder.
Ian acted quickly. Already on the ground, he kicked Phillip in the back of his shin, sending him straight to the ground. His eyes still raged with fury as Ian leapt onto his torso to hold him down. His forehead met Ianâs nose, and pain dulled his senses a little. His eyes watered, and moisture ran down his face.
Despite having the wind knocked out of him, Adam crawled over to hold down Phillipâs thrashing feet. Somehow Phillip had managed to keep an iron grip on the blade that now caused Ian to bleed onto his shirt. He did his best to hold Phillipâs wrist down, but Ian had had enough.
